Nerd Fight: Battle #29

It’s that time again. To reiterate, every Friday the Cupcake Rogues will randomly pick 2 characters to do battle – whether it be Marvel, DC, female, male, mutant, human, or human that pretends to be a mutant with magic (I’m looking at you, Juggernaut), they are all possible. Once we’ve randomly selected our two, they will go head to head in several categories with one being deemed winner. The winner will live on to fight another day, but a warning – with 200 possible characters, it may be awhile before round 2 🙂

Twenty-ninth week in the random selection:

Zatanna vs. Terra

Zatanna Terra
Origin Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of magician Giovanni Zatara and Sindella, a mystic. She is a direct descendant of Nostradamus, alchemist Nicholas Flamel, and Leonardo Da Vinci.  Her powers come from her genes. Tara Markov is the illegitimate daughter of the King of Markovia, making her the half sister of Brion Markov (Geo-Force). She obtained earth based powers through the experiments of Dr. Helga Jace and made her way to the United States. Believing that those with powers should rule the world, Tara became a mercenary and found herself working for Deathstroke.
Edge? Terra – she sounds batty. We like batty.
Powers/ Abilities Zatanna is a powerful sorceress, whose abilities are genetic. She mainly casts spells by speaking verbal commands backwards. Because of her dependence on her voice, enemies would often gag her, however, on rare occasions she has cast spells by writing him in her own blood as opposed to speaking them. Overuse of her magical powers can put strain on her physical health. The limits of Zatanna’s powers have never been established and she has been called the most powerful member of the Justice League (by who and why, that’s another question). She has used her powers to command elemental forces, heal, manipulate minds, attack with energy blasts, manipulated time and space, and even resurrect the city of Metropolis from ruin. She also does all the sleight of hand crap you’d expect from a magician. Terra has control over all earthly materials. She can transform its consistency, create earthquakes and conjure lava flows. She could also “fly” by traveling on a chunk of rock.
Edge? Zatanna – it’s pretty intense but convenient to be able to write spells in blood in case you ever get strep.
Love Interest Zatanna has had several romantic relationships with fellow characters, such as John Constantine, the Flash (Barry Allen), and Doctor Thirteen. The longest relationship she’s had however is the teetering on the edge of friends or something more with Batman. They often think about dating and decide they’re just friends, but Catwoman finds Zatanna to be a bigger threat to her than Batman’s own fiancée, Jezebel Jet. Despiste being only 15, Terra originally had a relationship with Deathstroke. (Let that sink in there for a minute) She also had a romantic relationship with Beast Boy.
Edge? Zatanna – the Cupcake Rogues do not promote pedophilia… not on purpose anyway.
Costume Zatanna wears a bikini bottom with a button down white short and show jacket along with gloves and a top hat. And of course, a bow tie. A yellow and brown/orange long sleeve bodysuit with matching booties and a mask.
Edge? Zatanna – you can’t beat class and skankiness united as one.
Most Entertaining Personality Zatanna’s personality seems to often depend on who’s writing her. Overall she’s kind of mundane, but confident with her magic and skills. She’s tough, flirty, and borderline cocky at moments. For being only 15, Terra is jaded and ruthless. She made friends out of the Teen Titans only to betray them. Plus she’s clearly a ho.
Edge? Terra – we DO, however, promote hoes.
Best story arch While at a support group for superheroes (why not?), Zatanna recounts a failed magical ritual to search for her father’s books, during which one of her past spells summons Gwydion, a shapeshifter, who kills her companions. This incident, combined with her guilt from her former mind-wipes, robs Zatanna of her powers. With the help of her new apprentice she captures Gwydion to use as her own. After awhile she regains her confidence and powers, and uses them to defeat a Time Tailor named Zor, who released the Sheeda as a plague to infect and degrade the entire universe. As a reward for this deed, another Time Tailors allows her one last meeting with her father, Giovanni Zatara. Giovanni then reveals that his books were written in her, his “greatest spell and gift to the world. Her introduction. During the Judas Contract she came across as a sweet young girl and befriended the Teen Titans, even forming a romantic attachment with Beast Boy. All the while she was really a spy for Deadshot. She staged a battle with the villain to win the Titans trust, and when she learned their weaknesses and identities she had no problem with relaying it to Deadshot. When the Titans were all captured and ready to be handed to H.I.V.E. Deadshot’s son Joseph Wilson possessed his father and with Robin’s help, released the Titans. Thinking she had been betrayed, Terra caused the H.I.V.E. compound to come crashing down, effectively killing herself.
Edge? Terra – Folks were shocked to find out that sweet little Terra was really a crazy Lolita .
Hotness Zatanna is a dark-haired beauty that always has a trick up her sleeve. I’d imagine this could work to your advantage if you were on her good side. Plus she looks like a slutty Halloween chick every day! *cheers* Terra looks like a product of her time, goofy costume and the hair of an early 80’s housewife.
Edge? Zatanna – let’s leave the 80’s look in the 80’s shall we?
Fiercest foe Lobo – he kills Zatanna’s father’s soul, making it impossible for her to retrieve him from Gull. Rather than allowing him to be rendered for the bricks and mortar of Hell, Zatanna kills his soul, sending him to the Abyss, a better (although only slightly) fate. Zatanna then seeks revenge on Lobo for being forced to kill her own father. Later, during Blackest Night she is faced with killing him once again. The Teen Titans. She duped them all into thinking she was a good little girl, than BAM – she betrays them to Deadshot.
Edge? Zatanna – it sucks to be forced to kill a loved one… especially more than once.
Biggest WTF Moment Following the flooding of Earth-26, the Zoo Crew is transformed into their animal counterparts and, though unable to speak, keep their human-level intelligence. Zatanna encounters the group and take Captain Carrot as a pet for her act. If you don’t see why this is hilarious, take a look at a picture of Captain Carrot below. A Terra clone would come on the scene years later. Though she claimed not to be the original crazy Terra, DNA tests would later confirm that she was in fact the original Terra. She retained no memory of her previous life and never learned of the results since her brother Geo-Force decided not to tell her.
Edge? Zatanna – CAPTAIN CARROT, HELLO???
Person who should attempt an on-screen portrayal Serinda Swan plays Zatanna on Smallville. I don’t watch Smallville, but in the clips I’ve seen, while she’s pretty and looks the part, I don’t know that her acting chops are up to par for an on-screen portrayal, but I’d let her audition. Taylor Momson – Because she plays a dumb teenager trying to be a bad ass really, really well.
Edge? Zatanna – We know next to nothing about either of these actresses, but if given the choice to see Zatanna in a Batman movie or Terra in a Teen Titans movie. We’ll go with Bats everytime.

Zatanna: 7

Terra:  3

And the winner is…. Zatanna! Sorry, Terra – you have a haircut only a mother could love.

Aaaaand… Captain Carrot – I think we’re all winners now:
