Update: Age of X

Two more “historical logs” have been released for Age of X and are below. Looks like everyone is getting in on this storyline and the Avengers are hunting down the X-Men (or whatever they’ll be calling themselves for this). I can’t wait for this to come out on 1/26, what about you?

Marvel: Do You Fear…?

Matt Fraction is talking about the upcoming Marvel Event “Fear Itself.” His comments are below. I don’t like the idea of them doing comics specifically to hype up their movies, but it sounds like maybe this was done in a way that it won’t seem forced. Here’s hoping because I’m excited about it!

On How the Upcoming Movies Influenced “Fear Itself”:
“What happened actually was that Tom contacted me and Ed Brubaker, saying, “We’ve got this Captain America and Thor thing happening this summer, so we’re wondering if maybe there’s a Cap/Thor series that could capitalize on that?” As Ed and I started to talk and I kind of got into it and he kind of got out of it, we came up with this story, but we kept having trouble figuring out, “how do you make this work for a movie audience? How do you start part one in May, and then have part three in July, and still have it make sense, and not have somebody have to go back, and buy two parts?”

“Just getting wrapped up in the logic of it all during a retreat. Joe Quesada just said, “[F*] it, what’s your story?” That kind of freed me to not worry about marketing and scheduling in my pitch — I had the core of the story, but I couldn’t figure out where it all fell. Once Joe said that, I was like, “Oh, great, well, here’s the story,” and I started to tell what I thought was a good, interesting, satisfying, Cap and Thor story.”

On the Main Premise of “Fear Itself” and How it Focuses on Cap and Thor:
“There’s an alliance between Sin and this guy, the Serpent, the God of Fear — this fellow that Odin banished millennia ago. You’ve got a big nightmare for Thor, which is basically a monstrous problem of his dad’s, and then with Cap you’ve got the Red Skull’s daughter — she’s sort of like the ultimate trust fund kid, she’s earned nothing but been given everything, which makes her completely lethal and completely horrible to deal with. You’ve got Cap and Thor dealing with their worst nightmares come true simultaneously. It irradiates and touches everybody else outside of that, but it starts and ends with Cap and Thor.”

On Iron Man and the X-Men’s Role in “Fear Itself”:
“It’s not the role that people will expect. He is a part of the story, it’s very much about the big three and their relationship to one another, but Iron Man takes a path that I hope surprises people; that he thwarts your basic assumption. That’s the other thing, trying to find a front and center position for the X-Men in the middle of all this, too. They tend to take the sideline during these things for one reason or another — the opportunity to get them on the main stage is very exciting.”

Video Game Update: X-Men Destiny

A new X-Men game is in the works, called “X-Men Destiny.” Xbox magazine has some details:

-The tone of the game is said to be “dark, mature, & intense” striving towards an adult feel, but a Mature rating is said to not be likely.

-San Francisco is divided into human & non-human sectors as Professor X is dead.

-The game starts with a peace rally being staged to pay tribute to Professor X, which is when you are prompted to pick one of three characters in the crowd.

-OXM’s Activision guide chose Adrian Luca as their character.

-The game presents the player with frozen in time “decision moments”, indicating its time for players to make a big choice. The first big choice in the game allows you to pick your power archetype ranging from being able to manipulate matter and your body mass, energy projection, or a third one that was kept a secret.

-The game allows you to decide who is friend or foe in the X-Men universe.

-Cyclops, Quicksilver, Surge, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, & Gambit are confirmed to make an appearance in the title, with plenty more to be announced.

-X-Genes play a rather large role in the game, ranging from boss fights to deciding to give it to an X-Men, or someone else to form another alliance.

-Linking together a good amount of attacks will fill up your “Mutant power” meter, allowing you to pull off even stronger special attacks.

-One of the special attacks described as a part of the “Mutant power” meter was “Force Pillars”. The attack was said to produce crowd clearing beams that rise from the ground.

The way it’s having you be your “own” character rather than an existing one almost sounds DC Universe online-ish to me. We’re overdue for a good X-Men game, but I’m not holding my breath yet. Thoughts?

X-Men: First to Last

This looks incredibly dumb to me, but I decided to post it anyway. It’s a teaser for the X-Men: First to Last bit that will be coming out in May. Obviously it’s to support the movie X-Men: First Class, but being that that train wreck only has 1 out of the 5 original First Class Members I don’t quite get how this is related. Thoughts?

Update: Age of X

More Age of X tid-bits have been coming out, including the “Historical Logs,” little viral previews that have been stuck in other Marvel comics. Take a look at the first three. Thoughts? Age of X comes to us on 1/26!

X-Men: Age of X

2 new photos have popped up from Age of X. The first by Chris Bachalo that shows, against my hope that we’d finally have one mag without him (not that I don’t love him, but come on), Wolverine is in it. It shows some characters we knew about – Thunderbird (as Berserker), Rogue (as Reaper), and Pixie. We also see what looks like Jubilee and Bling (blegh and blegh). The second by Olivier Coipel shows Gambit and Rogue awfully close *swoons*, as well as Colossus, Jubilee, Hellion, Magneto, Storm, Cyclops (as Basilisk) and what looks like Psylocke on the left and Dazzler on the right? Maybe a Namor in the back and Avalanche in the front? Not sure who are the two in the far back or the one in the front of Psylocke/Hellion (Maybe Sunspot as OrangeJulius suggested). Any new thoughts on this? I’m still wondering how they’re saying this ISN’T an AU?

X-Men: Age of X

Don’t know if you’ve all been following the Age of X reveals, but today we got our full look at the cast for Age of X and I’m kind of excited! It’ll be interesting to see how this is done… it seems AU, as some of these “new” characters seem to actually be Alternate Universe versions of real characters. For example, while Gambit is listed as Gambit and Magneto is listed as Magneto, the two added today (clearly Rogue and Jean Grey/Phoenix) are being called Reaper and Revenant. The guy in the back called Basilisk looks an awful lot like Cyclops, and so on. There isn’t a whole lot of plot detail on this yet, but since it launches on January 26, 2011, we can probably expect some soon. Thoughts?
