Movie Update: The Dark Knight Rises

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, we have a name for Batman 3: The Dark Knight Rises. Nolan also confirmed that the Riddler will NOT be in the movie. He says “It won’t be the Riddler. We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.” So no new news on who our villain might be but one more to cross off the list. The newest rumors have Killer Croc being mentioned as the villain, but that doesn’t quite fit in with Nolan’s realistic universe. In another recent rumor, some of the women meeting with Nolan for the casting of his leading lady are suggesting that Catwoman is still a great possibility. Thoughts?

Nerd Fight: Battle #22

It’s that time again. To reiterate, every Friday the Cupcake Rogues will randomly pick 2 characters to do battle – whether it be Marvel, DC, female, male, mutant, human, or human that pretends to be a mutant with magic (I’m looking at you, Juggernaut), they are all possible. Once we’ve randomly selected our two, they will go head to head in several categories with one being deemed winner. The winner will live on to fight another day, but a warning – with 200 possible characters, it may be awhile before round 2 🙂

Twenty-second week in the random selection:

Oracle vs. Catwoman

Oracle Catwoman
Origin Barbara Gordon has had a few origins, the latest has her as the niece and possible biological daughter of Jim Gordon. As a young girl, Barbara graduated early due to her genius level intellect. Though she would assist Batman as Batgirl on occasion, she decided to give up crime fighting and tried to pursue a normal life. Unfortunately for Barbara, the Joker would decide to use her as a pawn in an attempt to drive Jim Gordon over the edge. He shot Barbara through the spine and though it was the end for Batgirl, it was the beginning of Oracle’s career. Selina Kyle has several extensive origins. Her origin and character were revised in 1986 to become more modern. In this, Selina is a prostitute in order to survive and wants to break away from her abusive ex-boyfriend/pimp. After witnessing his crimes, she studies martial arts and takes in a young runaway, quitting prostitution. Selina is then led to burglary, which she does wearing a catsuit, and begins to become a modern-day female Robin Hood rather than an actual thief. After a confrontation she is inspired to stay in costume and become the Catwoman.
Edge? Catwoman – Both women try to leave a certain lifestyle. Catwoman got a sweet bodysuit…Barbara got a wheelchair.
Powers/ Abilities Barbara possesses a genius level intellect and an aptitude for computer science. As Oracle, she keeps one of the largest databases on both heroes and villain alike. She uses this information not only for her own organization, the Birds of Prey, but also provides help and information to other crime fighters. Catwoman is a peak athlete and expert burglar. She is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and is armedw tih razor-sharp retractable claws, bullwhips, and cat o’nine tails. She also has an empathic ability with cats.
Edge? Catwoman – Lets be honest, all Selina has to do is tip Barbara’s wheel chair over.
Love Interest Dick Grayson, aka Robin, aka Nightwing, aka new Batman is Oracle’s on again-off again love interest.  At one point they even get engaged, but the romance fizzles when Nightwing goes to help Batman rediscover himself and Barbara realizes they’re not ready for marriage. The mother f*ckin’ Batman. Batman and Catwoman have a long-time love/hate relationship that is second to none in the comic world. No one plays enemies/lovers as well as these two animal-loving bastards.
Edge? Catwoman – While both women can say they dated Batman, Selina caught the original.
Costume Barbara doesn’t really have a costume, but she’s usually wearing her signature glasses. Tight, black (originally purple) pleather catsuit with a whip, cat ears, and a mask. Rrrrroar.
Edge? Catwoman – Selina’s costume is the stuff fanboy fantasies are made of.
Most Entertaining Personality Although Barbara first falls into a depression after being paralyzed, she soon gathers her strength and starts training in upper-body combat. She is determined and intelligent. Catwoman is, above all, a femme fatale. She’s been given the short stick for most of her life (abusive father, disastrous orphanage, prostitution to survive, etc.) and because of that she’s hard as nails and knows how to get what she wants and needs to survive.
Edge? Oracle – we’ve got to give props to a fighter. Plus we love smart people – and hope to be one some day.
Best story arch Oracle’s biggest story arch is that of her actually becoming Oracle. The Joker captured her and paralyzed her, along with taking degrading pictures of her naked and tortured just to drive her father insane. Afterwards, she suggests they make an exception to their no-kill rule for the “Harlequin of Hate.” However, she eventually works through her depression and goes back to fighting the good fight. At one point, Catwoman appears to be completely reformed with her love for Batman stronger than ever. She comes to find out that this reformation is the result of Zatanna mindwiping her. After this revelation, Catwoman duct-tapes Zatanna’s mouth shut and pitches her out of a window (simmer down, she lives).  Catwoman then becomes a little unbalanced and unsure of herself. She has a confrontation with Black Mask and, like most villains in DC comics, he’s feeling pretty sweet about the fact that Catwoman adheres to a no-kill rule, much like her fellow heroes. You can imagine his surprise when Selina then shoots him in the head. This is the first time she’s ever taken a life and it continues to haunt her throughout the years.
Edge? Oracle – Catwoman’s got her on humor, but you can’t laugh you way out of becoming a parapalegic…Unless you’re the Joker.
Hotness Oracle is a hot ginger, and let’s not forget that intelligence is sexy, and she has plenty enough of that for her AND you. Ummm, a hot chick in a skin tight catsuit with a whip? It sells itself.
Edge? Catwoman – See Costume category
Fiercest foe The Joker – he paralyzed her… we good here? Batman – as I said earlier, no one has a better love/hate relationship.  I guess when you play both sides like Catwoman that’s bound to happen. She’s fought against Batman and with him through their decades long relationship, but they can never seem to get it quite right.
Edge? Oracle – The Batman may send mixed signals, but he’s not crippling, molesting and torturing a b*tch.
Biggest WTF Moment
  • She’s one of the most intelligent people on the planet and she partners up with Batman – a genius in biochemistry and stem cell research, but she’s still stuck in that chair?!
  • One of her informants’ names is Cheesefiend. While I love cheese as much as the next gal… Cheesefiend?!
Selina’s biggest WTF is actually her bat-shit crazy nun sister. Long ago, the Black Mask  drilled out Maggie’s husband’s eyes and force fed them to Maggie, driving her insane (and can we get a WTF as to why a nun has a husband?). Later on, when Black Mask is going back to Arkham Asylum to attack Maggie again, Selina tries to save her; however, Maggie blames Catwoman for all of her misfortunes and bat-shit craziness. She escapes Arkham, brutally murders a nun, steals her costume, and chants about how she must kill Catwoman to free Selina’s soul.
Edge? Catwoman – Ack! She had to eat his eyes!? This is all kinds of revolting!
Person who should attempt an on-screen portrayal Kate Mara has been suggested to play Oracle…Yeah, lets go with her. There have been several who have attempted the role on TV, but the two in movies were Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry. I’m just gonna go ahead and skip over that Halle Berry mention *cough cough* and go with Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer played a great line between good and evil with a touch of weird. She might be a little too seasoned to play her now, but she did the role justice in 92.
Edge? Catwoman – Even Halle Berry’s dreadful Catwoman can’t knock Queen Pfeiffer off her throne!

Oracle: 3

Catwoman:  7

And the winner is….  Catwoman! She’ll scratch your eyes out! …and then Black Mask will make you eat them. Wait, what?
