Casting Update: Spider-Man

According to Filmonic.com, 5 actresses are up for the female lead for the Spider-Man reboot: Ophelia Lovibond, Lilly Collins, Teresa Palmer, Emma Roberts, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. However, interestingly enough they are not up for Mary Jane Watson. It has not been confirmed who the female lead will be – Gwen Stacy, Felicia Hardy, or another character. Black Cat would be cool! Thoughts?

Nerd Fight – Battle #15

It’s that time again. To reiterate, every Friday the Cupcake Rogues will randomly pick 2 characters to do battle – whether it be Marvel, DC, female, male, mutant, human, or human that pretends to be a mutant with magic (I’m looking at you, Juggernaut), they are all possible. Once we’ve randomly selected our two, they will go head to head in several categories with one being deemed winner. The winner will live on to fight another day, but a warning – with 200 possible characters, it may be awhile before round 2 🙂

Fifteenth week in the random selection:

Green Lantern vs Black Cat

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan Version) Black Cat
Origin Hal Jordan was a test pilot trying to get out from under the shadow of his dead father, who was an ace Air Force pilot. Hal’s father died in a crash while Hal watched. He promised his mother that he’d never join the Air Force, but eventually broke that promise. Hal punched his commanding officer in order to be discharged from the Air Force once he heard his mother was dying and had no interest in seeing him from his brother Jack. He arrived at the hospital just after she passed away. Later, while testing a flight simulator, Hal landed out in the desert by a crashed alien ship. A dying alien, Abin Sur, gave him a power ring, thus making him the Green Lantern. Hal Jordan is DC’s second Green Lantern and the first earth man to ever be inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. Felicia Hardy was a freshman in college when she was raped by her boyfriend, Ryan. Hating that she had been a victim she decided to dedicate her time to practicing many forms of martial arts. Though she knew the consequences, she intended to hunt down her rapist and kill him. Unfortunately before she could exact her revenge, he was killed in a drunk driving accident. Furious that she’d been denied, Felicia decided to follow in her criminal father’s footsteps and focus her efforts into becoming a notorious cat burglar.
Edge? Green Lantern – I don’t know about you, but I don’t meet dying aliens everyday.
Powers/ Abilities Green Lantern has an un-fun amount of powers. If I listed them all this would be a novel, so here are a few: creates  constructs of  green solid energy limited only by imagination, flight, instantaneous transport across the galaxy, plasma bolts, telepathy, time travel (with combined rings), energy force beams, translation of nearly all languages (COME ON, this is just getting to be over the top now), phasing, invisibility, blah blah blah, everything. Originally, Black Cat had no powers, but because of a test done by the Kingpin she gained the ability to affect probability fields of people she sensed were a threat. Dr. Strange would alter her powers to become more cat-like. These included talons, superhuman speed, strength, agility, endurance and infrared vision. She would lose these powers as well and would replace them with devices used to recreate her lost abilities.
Edge? Green Lantern – What are the chances that a chick who dresses as a cat receives cat-like powers not one, but twice?
Love Interest First, Jordan fell in love with psychic Kari Limbo, but she left him at the alter, but his main love is Carol Ferris, part-time villain and Star Sapphire. Carol and Hal have had a long, off-and-on relationship over the years due to Jordan’s inability to commit to the relationship. Their relationship ended when Hal sacrificed his life to re-ignite the sun after being possessed by Parallax. After years of him being presumed dead, Carol moved on and married another man. She eventually divorces that man and goes back to the turbulent relationship with Jordan. Black Cat’s main love interest has always been Spiderman. They would meet as opponents on several occasions but soon started a relationship. When Peter revealed his secret identity to her, Felicia was let down as she didn’t understand why part of him needed a normal life. They would continue to have an on and off relationship until at one point Felicia returned from a prolonged trip to Paris to discover that Peter had married his other longtime love Mary Jane Watson. Felicia did what every jilted girl does, dated Peter’s enemy, threatened the bride’s life and generally harassed the happy couple.
Edge? Green Lantern – Who fights over that dweeb Peter Parker?
Costume A black and green skin tight bodysuit with a symbol of the green lantern, a mask, and of course, the power ring. The Black Cat wears a skintight, lowcut black bodysuit accessorized with white furry accessories. She also dons a black  eyemask. (Like anyone’s looking her in the eyes).
Edge? Black Cat – Skin tight bodysuits seem to  work out better on females for the most part.
Least off-putting personality Hal is cocky, spontaneous, and a bit arrogant. He’s also been alleged as the “bravest man on Earth.” Black Cat is spoiled, selfish and superficial.  She would even ask Peter Parker to keep his Spiderman mask on so she wouldn’t have to think of him as Peter Parker. Way to raise the guys self confidence Felicia.

Even when she started a relationship with Puma she was disappointed when Spiderman let his secret identity be known because she thought the idea that she was in on his secret was sexy.

Edge? Green Lantern – He may be arrogant, but nobody likes a spoiled brat.
Best story arch A villainous alien named Mongul plotted to take advantage of the death of Superman. Mongul destroys Coast City (Jordan’s home) and everyone in it. Jordan defeats Mongul and attempts to use his ring to recreate his city. The Guardians do not approve of his use of the ring for personal gain and put Jordan on trial. Jordan, angered by the Guardians’ ungrateful behavior, foes insane and attacks Oa to seize full power of the Central Power Battery, destroying the Corps. He then relinquishes his life as a Green Lantern and takes the name Parallax. As Parallax, he attempts to rewrite history to his own liking, but if defeated by a group of heroes. When Black Cat realizes her lack of super powers makes her a liability to Spiderman, she attempts to gain them through the same procedure that created the Scorpian. What she doesn’t realize is that her new power is actual “bad luck” and it’s given to her by the Kingpin- payback for stealing from him some time before. When Felicia finds out her powers are negatively affecting Spiderman and will eventually kill him, she leaves.
Edge? Green Lantern – we love the fight between good and evil within a superhuman. Just makes sense.
Hotness Who doesn’t like a cocky fighter pilot, right? Plus, the creator of Hal Jordan said he was supposed to liken Paul Newman. Hot. There’s a reason artists love to draw Felicia. She’s incredibly hot. Between the long platinum hair, green eyes and phenomenal figure encased in black leather and white fur her male opponents don’t stand a chance.
Edge? Black Cat – guys are way easier to control with hotness 😉
Fiercest foe Sinestro started out as Hal Jordan’s instructor, but soon met his downfall when Hal exposed Sinestro’s dictatorship to the Guardians, resulting in him being banished to the anti-matter universe. He returned from there and they’ve been fighting ever since. Peter Parker – Black Cat hates sharing Spiderman with him.
Edge? Green Lantern – fighting over a man is so Jean/Emma, Black Cat. Come on.
Biggest WTF Moment For a while, Jordan was romantically involved with an alien Lantern named Arisia, for which he came under fire; a difference in time between Earth and her planet meant that in earth years, she was roughly fourteen years old.
  • Before Black Cat acquired her bad-luck powers she used to fake them. Before committing a heist she would set up traps to make adversaries think she was bad luck.
  • Once to escape jail time Black Cat pretended to be crazy by luring Spiderman to her house and showing him her collection of Spiderman memorabilia. It worked, Spidey carted her off to insane asylum
Edge? DRAW– While Hal nearly pulls a Polanski, Felicia makes you wonder what else she’s faking…Both make us say, WTF?
Person who should attempt an on-screen portrayal Ryan Reynolds is playing Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern movie. Reynolds, who is known for taking on more witty, light-hearted roles than the more serious Jordan, has yet to be judged on this character. Personally, I would’ve picked someone a bit more serious (and that wasn’t already tied to another character, but I won’t even get started). The fan favorite seems to be Rachel McAdams. She’s already played a shallow self centered blonde in Mean Girls.
Edge? R2 –DRAW – Reynolds looks great as Hal and I’m fine with actors playing more than one superhero so long as they’re not in the same universe. R2 – DRAW – McAdams is certainly pretty enough to be Felicia and might actually be able to make the spoiled brat likeable.

R1 – You all already know how I feel about RR playing Hal Jordan. He’s Wade Wilson. Done and done. Team McAdams on this one.

Green Lantern:  8

Black Cat:  5

And the winner is….  Green Lantern – Alien tested, PETA approved.
