Obscure Comic Book Character of the Week

I’ve decided to move OCBCotW to every Monday, because it’s a great pick me up when you’ve got a case of the Mondays. Today’s character is Matter-Eater Lad from DC Universe. I feel especially bad for anyone named Lad. It seems to be a step down from “boy” in the lame list. As you probably guessed, Matter-Eater Lad can eat matter in any amount at super speed. Helpful if you need to get rid of evidence or your garbage disposal is on the fritz, but in the long run, pretty useless. The natives of his planet Bismoll (Pepto? Might need some after eating all that matter) found that microbes had made all their food inedible, and that the population evolved their ability to eat all matter as a survival mechanism to overcome that problem. Thus creating the gem you see before you.

YES ! he’s from the Legion of Superheroes… they are so cheesy I love ’em… it also looks like he’s going down on that fence and that’s awesome.

You’ve got to love comics from back in the day. There really wasn’t a whole lot of thought going into characters. Chow Down Lad is a great example. If microbes had suddenly made all their food inedible (how would something like that just happen anyway?), wouldn’t everyone have died after a few weeks? That’s some quick evolving going on there. “Screw Darwin, we’re making this happen now! I’m starving!”

This guy’s power is pretty lame. In most fights he probably pulls a Water-Boy. If you haven’t seen the movie The Specials, sorry. If you have seen it, you’ll get it.
