Casting Update: Spider-Man

Columbia Pictures announced that Rhys Ifans will be playing the villain in the upcoming Spider-Man Reboot. Director Mark Webb was quoted as saying “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

So… who will he be playing? Thoughts?

The warmth and rage bit makes me think of the Lizard. Definitely not one of my fav Spidey villains, but this movie already seems like a mess…

Don’t disregard it yet. There is some pretty strong talent involved. Andrew Garfield is a great actor, if a little old for the teenage, early 20s slant that Sony originally pitched us. Emma Stone is cute and funny. Her casting seems to be… political since she has been a Columbia Tristar/Sony actress for a while now. Rhys Ifans can do creepy and lovable at the same time, like in Enduring Love – very sympathetic and extremely crazy. Human Nature, weird movie but good range. Don’t hate the movie yet. At least it’s not X-Men: The Special Class.

Rhys Ifans would make a good Electro. If the interweb rumors are true, it’ll be Venom. The studio likes Venom but they weren’t happy with the last movie. I think they will get some distance from the previous films before bringing some of those characters back. The way it is now, it still flows (somewhat) from Spider-Man 3 into this… reboot. I’m starting to hate that word. The only real hiccup will be explaining Peter and Mary Jane’s relationship, because Gwen Stacy was just introduced in SM3. If done correctly, it won’t even seem like a reboot.

Well, ANYTHING’S better than X-Men: Fart Class. I’m still given this Spider-Man reboot the side-eye, but I’ll probably still see it in the theater. I’m really only looking forward to Green Lantern, Cap America, Thor, and Avengers right now.

And Flash? It was just announced yesterday that the writing group behind GL is working on The Flash as well as GL2. The plan right now is Green Lantern, Batman 3, Superman, The Flash. The funny bit is that Bradley Cooper is up for the role.

Cooper was originally going to play Hal Jordan in Green Lantern, while Ryan Reynolds was supposed to play The Flash.

I’m not all that excited about Flash – I’m sure I’ll see it, but it’s Barry Allen Flash and, although I’m not a huge Flash person anyway, the one I know better is Wally West. I couldn’t even tell you if Cooper would make a good Barry Allen. But let’s be honest, what I REALLY want to see is… Deadpool. Sad face.
