Casting Update: Spider-Man Reboot

UPDATE: Turns out Emma Stone was offered the role of Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane… random. Thoughts?

Emma Stone has been offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man reboot. Although I liked her in Zombieland and Superbad, I can’t really picture her with a Mary Jane Watson personality (or lack there of I should say). As you may remember, the main love interest for Peter Parker in the reboot will supposedly be Gwen Stacy, so Emma would play Mary Jane in the later movies… yes, we’re already considering multiple movies for this train wreck. At least it’s got to be better than First Class… right? Right?!

In general, I don’t mind a new Spider-Man movie. Emma Stone is a great choice for Mary Jane. Her personality fits pretty good, and she’s a natural redhead (I think). Two choices for Gwen Stacy suck though, I don’t remember who they were, they were too old. But then, Garfield is too old for Peter Parker; he’s 27-28.

My biggest grievance is that instead of just moving forward with the story, with a new cast, Sony thought that the only way to salvage the series was to restart. Why? Was Spider-Man 3 really that ba… Never mind. I see their point. All kidding aside, they would have been better off just recasting. In the movie-verse, Parker was supposed to be in his early 20s. Fine, just recast and keep going. What does the reboot offer? Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, a true to the original confrontation between Goblin and Spider-Man on a bridge involving the death of a girlfriend? His rogue’s gallery is so large that you can pull villains for him for awhile before you would need to reboot.

The wildest rumor to date on the Spider-Man reboot: Philip Seymour Hoffman as Venom. I feel stupid repeating that.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit – Philip Seymour Hoffman as Venom?!?! WTF?! I agree that they should’ve just moved on with these movies – I don’t want to see Spider-Man’s change again. Frankly I thought Spider-Man 1 and 2 were fine – it was 3 that they ruined. They can reboot a Venom storyline, but rebooting it all seems unnecessary.

Don’t worry, it’s just a wild unconfirmed rumor… for now! (somewhere an evil scientist is laughing maniacally)

Soooo, apparently Emma Stone was cast today… as Gwen Stacy. Weird.
