Nerd Fight – Battle #18

It’s that time again. To reiterate, every Friday the Cupcake Rogues will randomly pick 2 characters to do battle – whether it be Marvel, DC, female, male, mutant, human, or human that pretends to be a mutant with magic (I’m looking at you, Juggernaut), they are all possible. Once we’ve randomly selected our two, they will go head to head in several categories with one being deemed winner. The winner will live on to fight another day, but a warning – with 200 possible characters, it may be awhile before round 2 🙂

Eighteenth week in the random selection:

Aquaman vs Huntress

Aquaman Huntress
Origin Aquaman was born Orin and is the son of an Atlantean queen and a wizard. Though he was next in line for the throne of Atlantis, the people rejected him because of his blonde hair, which was considered a curse. So the infant Orin was left to die on Mercy Reef. Luckily for little Orin, his powers kicked in and a dolphin picked up on his distress and rescued him.  Orin would be taken in by Tom Curry and renamed Arthur Curry.  Orin had memories of his life underwater but when he returned to Atlantis it was to find his family imprisoned.  Vowing to one day return and free Atlantis, Orin returned to the surface and along with the Flash, formed the original Justice League of America! Helena Rose Bertinelli was born of Gotham’s most prominent Mafia families. At age 8, she witnesses the murder of her entire family. She later finds out that her real father is the don of a rival mafia family, who was having an affair with her mother. Obsessed with revenge, Helena is exiled by Batman, who finds her to be too violent and out of control. She later crosses paths with Barbara Gordon, Batman, and Catwoman, who become partial mentors, and partial antagonists in becoming a superhero.
Edge? Aquaman – He started the Justice League… Helena can’t even remain a member for longer than a week.
Powers/ Abilities Aquaman gets a bum rap because most people think all he can do is gossip with starfish. However, he can actually telepathically communicate with any organic life form and due to his Atlantean composition, he possesses super strength, durability and the ability to breathe underwater. While in the possession of the Waterbearer Hand he could dehydrate with a single touch. His main weakness is that he can’t stay on land for long periods of time. Highly trained athlete and martial artist.
Edge? Aquaman – I don’t think a high-kick is going to stop the water from being sucked out of you.
Love Interest Aquaman’s main love interest is Mera, a woman from another dimension. They would marry and have a child named Arthur Curry Jr. But their child was murdered by Black Manta, driving Mera insane. Mera was committed to an asylum but would escape and flee to her home dimension, blaming Aquaman for the death of their son. After the “Blackest Night” saga, Mera would reunite with a resurrected Aquaman. Helena’s love interests have all been short – including Catman and Nightwing.
Edge? Aquaman – at least he can keep a woman… even if she does end up going insane and trying to off him.
Costume Aquaman’s most recognized costume consists of an orange, gilled top and green pants. Huntress wears a black and purple bodysuit (sometimes a one-piece, sometimes two) with thigh-high boots, a cape, arm length gloves and an eye mask.
Edge? Huntress – Either Aquaman is colorblind or colors appear different under water. Either way, there’s no excuse for the glaring orange and green getup.
Least off-putting personality Aquaman has a hard time reconciling his superhero persona with his Kingly duties. At one point, he sinks into a depression and loses all interest in being King of Atlantis or a superhero. The Huntress is unpredictable, violent, and fueled by revenge. Batman is not a big fan – I think that says it all.
Edge? Huntress – Sure she has anger management issues, but at least she’s not pouting in the “Aquacave”.
Best story arch Aquaman had a contingency plan that should anything threaten to wipe out Atlantis, he would protect them by moving them to the past. Thinking the ancient people of Atlantis would welcome the refugees; they were surprised to find ancient Atlantis ruled by an evil sorceress who promptly imprisoned the modern Atlantians and their ruler. With the help of the JLA, Aquaman triumphs and punishes the ancient Atlantians, by sending Atlantis back underwater. Accused of being the source of Atlantis’s problems, Aquaman is put on trial for treason and exiled. He travels to Ireland, where he meets the mythic Lady of the Lake. The LotL gifts Aquaman with the Water Bearer hand, granting him more power than he ever had before. Finally with Batman’s sponsorship, the Huntress joins the Justice League. She plays a key role in defeating Solaris in the DC One Million storyline, but is then forced to resign when Batman has to stop her from killing an incapacitated Prometheus, proving that her anger and violence is still controlling her.
Edge? Aquaman – Aquaman’s had more going on in his Best Story Arch than the Huntress did in her entire existence!
Hotness Aquaman is usually a clean cut looking blonde guy, though he had a scruffy period involving long hair and a hippy beard, along with a harpoon hand. Helena is a dark-haired Sicilian beauty with a touch of crazy. What man doesn’t like that, right?
Edge? Huntress – Harpoon hands aren’t that sexy, unless you’re a pirate wench. Arghhhhh!
Fiercest foe Aquaman has 2 – Ocean Master and Black Manta. Ocean Master is Aquaman’s amnesiac half-brother (of course he is), Orm who is a sorcerer. The two are destined to battle for control of Atlantis.

Black Manta is an unfortunate fellow who was kidnapped and raped aboard a ship, trying to signal to Aquaman to save him for years, but Aquaman never knew. Naturally, he harbored a insane-level grudge and was determined to kill Aquaman and take rule of Atlantis. Black Manta did succeed in killing Aquaman’s infant son (Not cool, Manta!), which caused Mera to flip her wig and blame Aquaman for his death.

Revenge is Helena’s fiercest foe. She’s said on many occasion that witnessing her family’s murder and thinking she could’ve done something is what has fueled her violent and unpredictable behavior all of these years.
Edge? Aquaman – I’m pretty sure his 2 hardcore villains would tie Helena’s revenge to the train-tracks.
Biggest WTF Moment During his break with Mera, Aquaman would begin a relationship with Dolphin, a mostly mute girl who due to experiments performed on her could live underwater. Aquaman would lose Dolphin’s affections to Tempest, the former Aqualad…basically an adopted son and close personal friend. With Aquaman’s blessing they would go on to marry and have a child…Awkward. The Huntress was upgraded to Batgirl for awhile, but gave up the moniker because she didn’t want to listen to Batman’s orders. Seriously? He’s the m-f-in’ Batman. He speaks, you listen!
Edge? Aquaman – Hopefully no one ever tells Tempest and Dolphin’s child that his/her mother used to get railed by her husbands surrogate father.
Person who should attempt an on-screen portrayal Aquaman has recently been portrayed by Alan Ritchson in the series Smallville. Instead of the depressed ruler of the seas, Alan played Arthur as a much more lighthearted character, even being ballsy enough to call Lex Luthor a tool. Monica Bellucci would be a great Huntress like 10 years ago – does that count? She’s 46 now (although she doesn’t look it), but she’s got the Huntress look and she’s a great actress.
Edge? Aquaman – Watch the clip of him saving Lois Lane on Youtube and that’s really all the evidence you need.

Aquaman:  7

Huntress:  3

And the winner is…. Aquaman – finally redemption after years of people assuming he can only talk to fish!

I agree,Aquaman is the butt of many jokes. I’d like to see people laugh at him while he sucks the water right out of you.

Don’t forget Vinny Chase played Aquaman on Entourage. I don’t remember his last name, but it was a major role directed by James Cameron… even though it’s fake.
