Nerd Fight – Battle #17

It’s that time again. To reiterate, every Friday the Cupcake Rogues will randomly pick 2 characters to do battle – whether it be Marvel, DC, female, male, mutant, human, or human that pretends to be a mutant with magic (I’m looking at you, Juggernaut), they are all possible. Once we’ve randomly selected our two, they will go head to head in several categories with one being deemed winner. The winner will live on to fight another day, but a warning – with 200 possible characters, it may be awhile before round 2 🙂

Seventeenth week in the random selection:

Storm vs Loki

Storm Loki
Origin Ororo Monroe’s mother was the princess of a tribe in Kenya and the descendent of a long line of African witch-priestesses with white hair, blue eyes, and a gift for sorcery. Her mother falls in love with an American photojournalist and moves to New York. Her parents are killed when a fighter plane crashed into their house when Ororo is 6, thus sparking her violent claustrophobia from being buried under so much rubble. She becomes a thief in Egypt (one of  her victims was Charles Xavier) and then wanders into the Serengeti once she becomes a young woman. There she is a worshipped as a rain goddess before being recruited by Professor X. Loki was born to Laufey, King of the Frost Giants, and mortal enemy to the gods of Asgard. During one of their many battles, Odin slays Laufey and discovers Loki, who Laufey had hidden away because he was ashamed to have produced such a tiny (to Frost Giant standards) son. Odin took Loki and raised him as his own along with his natural son Thor. While Thor was exceedingly popular among the Asgardians, Loki was looked down upon for his oddness. Originally considered the god of mischief his pranks soon turned malicious and Loki was dubbed the god of evil.
Edge? DRAW – Both of these are good origins, I just can’t think of anything witty to say because I’m knackered.
Powers/ Abilities Storm has the ability to control the weather. She possesses the psionic ability to control all forms of weather over vast areas as well as being able to control Earthly and extraterrestrial ecosystems. She can also control the pressure inside the human inner ear and bend light to become almost completely invisible. Sentinels have identified Storm as a possible Omega-level mutant, and it is also hinted at that she has extreme magical potential due to her ancestors. Being a descendent of the Frost Giants has given Loki increased stamina and strength. He is the most skilled magician in all of Asgard, his mastery of the dark arts granting  him the ability to fly, teleport, manipulate energy and make himself intangible. Loki’s also a telepath of such skill that he can contact someone across the galaxy with ease. Loki is second only to Odin in intellect and is so persuasive that he’s managed to talk his way back into Asgard even though he’s tried to kill Thor numerous times. The Silver Surfer has stated that Loki has the power to decimate an entire planet.
Edge? Loki – For a dude with a serious Napoleon complex, he sure is talented.
Love Interest Storm has had a few love interests, mainly Forge and T’Challa, alias Black Panther. Earlier on in her life, Forge saves Storm from death while she was powerless and they fall in love. One day, she hears a phone conversation between Forge and Gyrich and discovers Forge built the weapon that made her powerless, so she leaves him. They get back together and break up several more times (one even including a proposal), but it doesn’t work out.

After House of M, Storm leaves the X-Men to go to Africa and rekindles her relationship with T’Challa. She marries him and becomes the queen of Wakanda.

Angerboda – Not a whole lot to say about these two, they marry and have 3 charming children. Hela – goddess of the dead,  Fenris Wolf and the Midgard Serpent.
Edge? Storm – Storm marries and becomes queen of a country, Loki marries a giantess and gets hideous children.
Costume She’s had several – the most notable is the white, one-piece long sleeved body suit with matching cape and the black , sleeveless, one piece body suit with thigh highs and a cape. Though his costume changes a bit from time to time, Loki basically stays true to his signature colors green and yellow. One thing that never changes is his choice in headgear, which includes a set of massive curved horns. Two words…Over compensation.
Edge? Storm – Lets be honest, Loki’s headgear looks like a mutant ram mated with a coat rack, and no, it does not make you look taller.
Best Death Not long after Storm defeats Cyclops in a competition to become leader of the X-men she dies giving her life force to defeat the Adversary. She is later resurrected by the Omniversal Guardian, Roma. Through a deal he’s worked out with his daughter Hela, Loki has been granted a reprieve Loki would be beheaded by Thor during the battle of Ragnarok. It would later be revealed that Loki planned this with the aid of Dr. Doom (DOOM!!!) so that Thor would revive not only Loki, but other dead foes as well. Unfortunately for Loki, he was revived in a chicks body. (More on that later)
Edge? DRAW – Storm dies a noble death, but Loki planned his own, that takes horns balls.
Best story arch Storm and five team mates formed a splinter group of the X-Men known as the X-Treme X-Men. During a mission in Australia, Storm reunited with Gambit to get him to obtain her mother’s ruby. The ruby was part of a set that, when powered, opened a portal between dimensions. Another-dimensional warrior named Shaitan attacked and captured Gambit, stealing the ruby. Shaitan used the gems and Gambit’s power to open a portal, allowing armies of his master, Khan, to invade Earth. Storm was taken prisoner by Khan as the warlord intended to make her his queen. Storm attempted to seduce Khan into cancelling his invasion while her team tried to close the portal. Khan’s other wenches got jealous of Storm’s advances and tried to kill her. Despite her injuries, Storm triumphed and escaped, rejoining her team to destroy the portal. Loki was prophesied to be the one to bring about Ragnarok, the destruction of  all the gods of Asgard. Loki took this prophesy very seriously and dedicated a great deal of time to accumulating an army and forging Uru weapons on par with Mjolnir. Though Thor initially fought his brother, he learned that Ragnarok was actually a cycle created by “Those Who Sit Above” simply for their amusement. The Asgardians would constantly be destroyed and reborn. Determined to break the cycle, Thor decides to let Asgard be destroyed, but not before he beheads Loki and kills “Those Who Sit Above”.  Once Asgard has been destroyed the Asgardians would be reborn into human bodies.
Edge? Loki – Sort of. While he does bring about the destruction of the Asgardian gods, he also gets his head chopped off.
Hotness Tall, slim, with cocoa skin, blue eyes, and white hair. Storm is a rare beauty and I’d be willing to bet she has a lot of men lined up outside her door. Though diminuitive by Asgardian/Frost Giant standards, Loki is 6’5 with green eyes and black/gray hair.
Edge? Storm – With her one of a kind looks, Storm is arguably the hottest X-chick around. While Loki sounds good on paper, he has a serious case of the crazy eyes and a creepy smile. This look only works if your skin is white and your hair is green.
Fiercest foe Shadow King –  Since her childhood, whenever Storm has seen trouble, the Shadow King isn’t far behind. He’s hunted her, possessed her, and possessed many of her loved ones, requiring her to fight them. In their last confrontation, Storm got Bast, the Panther God, to hide inside Storm’s mind, so when Shadow King went to possess her, Bast defeated him. Thor – Sadly, Loki has no one to blame but himself for this one. His hatred for his adopted brother has consumed him to the point where Loki refuses to conquer other worlds/galaxies, saying that it’s his destiny to cause trouble for the Odinson.
Edge? Loki – No doubt the Shadow King is a crazy stalker, but his obsession pales on comparison to Loki’s. Thor must’ve pantsed Loki one too many times as a child.
Biggest WTF Moment After beating Callisto for leadership of the Morlocks, Storm begins to develop a darker side. When the X-Men join Wolverine in Japan for his marriage to Mariko, Wolverine’s old friend Yukio and Storm become fast friends. Yukio encourages Storm to embrace her emerging darkside and this results in Storm donning punk leather with a bitchin’ Mohawk. So hard core. Even the artist that created it refers to it as “a bad joke.”
  1. After Ragnarok destroys all Asgardians, Loki is reborn as a woman
  2. How does crossing a Frost Giant with a Giantess get you a World Serpent and a Wolf Demon for a son?
Edge? Storm – Loki’s monster kids can be chalked up to keeping with the original Norse myths.  Storm embracing her punk side is just strange.
Person who should attempt an on-screen portrayal Halle Berry portrays Storm in the X-Men movie series. Halle is OK at best – although her phasing out of Ororo’s accent was lame. Let’s be honest, there is only one woman perfect for Storm – Iman 10-15 years ago. Perfect! Tom Hiddleston is set to portray Loki in the soon to be released Thor movie. Hiddleston is a classically trained actor and has a marvelous speaking voice. We’re willing to bet our Wonder Woman underoos that he’ll be the best part of the movie.
Edge? Loki – Halle just wasn’t quite right for Storm, and although Iman IS Storm, she’s a little too old to do it now (unless we do a movie version of X-Men: the End – then sign her up!) and we’re not certain on her acting abilities.

Storm:  6

Loki:  6

Tie…. GASP! Tie-breaker time…

Storm Loki
Best voice Storm has an indistinguishable African accent and, most importantly, she talks in grandiose speeches before using her powers, such as:

  • Storm, mistress of the elements, commands you!
  • Nature! Respond to my command! A wall of rain to quench the flames!
  • Hail, fill the skies with rocks of ice! From the ends of the Earth, send limitless cold upon him!
Loki’s been around a long time – long enough that he still speaks in old English. Being the drama queen of the family, he tends to project a lot of theatricality to his speeches:

  • Methinks only a jester would suggest such a thing!
  • I wish to visit to a mortal born who doth surely reside among your charges.
  • Am I to be the final victim of the elemental force which I myself set loose upon the land? NAY! ‘Tis too ironic-too ABSURD!
Edge? Storm – although Loki’s speech is fan-friggin-tastically absurd, all of the Asgardians talk this way. Storm has no rhyme or reason behind her speeches – she’s just kind of an oddball.

And the winner is…. STORM!!!! MISTRESS OF THE ELEMENTS!!!!!!

I’d give it to Loki by some margin.

I often feel that the god of mischief is underestimated.

As an Aussie science fiction writer I’ve been a Marvel fan since the original Journey into Mystery of August 1962.
